Wonka (At the Movies week 4)

Teaching Big Idea: Jesus invites us to believe in Him, into the life He offers, and to join Him on mission to change the world.

Jesus came that we could experience life beyond all measure. Jesus came to pay a debt that we could never pay. Jesus came to invite us to join His family and join Him on the mission of changing the world.

Sin had separated us from God and every amount of human effort had fallen short because the only way for that chasm to be spanned was by a perfect sacrifice of a perfect Savior.

We have been invited to experience Jesus. We have been invited to share Him with others. It begins with belief. It begins with believing that Jesus is God. Believing that He sacrificed for you. That without Him you are lost. It begins with belief.

So, do you believe?

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (At the Movies week 3)

TEACHING BIG IDEA: I join Jesus by influencing broken people to accept God’s grace and find healing.

We can all struggle with purpose, mission, calling, etc. As Christ followers, God has given us a certain special responsibility in this life on earth. We are called to influence other people towards God.

Influence is a powerful tool that we all have the ability to use. How we use our influence truly matters when it comes to how we lead the people around us. Christians should influence people to follow Jesus. We can leverage the influence we have to point others to God by joining Jesus’ mission to reach the lost, the last, and the least and seeing the hurting people around us.

When we commit to joining Jesus on His mission to heal the broken and restore people back into relationship with God, we discover a deep purposeful life—one that recognizes and allows the power of the Holy Spirit to change people’s hearts and minds, restore broken families, heal physical and mental ailments, and bring forth new life in desert places. Our influence can be the nudge they need to return back to relationship with God, where life change can happen.

The Martian (At the Movies week 2)

TEACHING BIG IDEA: It takes work to trust God and endure the storms of life.

Obstacles are an inevitable part of life, something that every individual must face. Jesus himself told us that we will encounter troubles in this world. However, He also encouraged us to take heart and find comfort in the fact that He has overcome the world. This assurance provides us with a profound sense of hope and resilience. Despite the trials we may encounter while living in this world, it is crucial to maintain an eternal perspective. It is easy to become fixated on what we lack and make excuses for our struggles. However, when we turn our focus to Christ, we can discover our path and find guidance, for in Him lies our everlasting hope.

Knowing the glory and peace that await us in eternity offers us the patient endurance and strength needed to face whatever comes our way. As we embark on our individual journeys with courage, hope, and determination, we are continually reminded that, with God’s guidance, no obstacle is too great and no journey too daunting. His presence and support empower us to navigate life’s challenges with unwavering faith and trust in His divine plan.

Spider-Man: No Way Home (At the Movies week 1)

TEACHING BIG IDEA: Everything I gain from following Jesus is worth everything I lose by sacrificially denying myself.

Identity is complex. Christ-followers are called to place our hope in Jesus, and to firmly root identity in who He is. How we live out of our identity in Jesus can become hard when the troubles and sorrows of life surround us and beat us down.

Jesus leads us to discover our true identity. First, Jesus calls us to deny ourselves—our selfish desires, our ambitions, our greed and materialism, or anything else that reflects that we are prioritizing ourselves instead of making Jesus first. Secondly, we pick up our cross daily. This is sacrificial living exemplified in our willingness to suffer and carry the burden of the cross every day for the sake of Christ. Thirdly, we follow Jesus. We learn from Him to become like Him in every aspect of our lives.

When we deny ourselves, die to ourselves, and then commit completely to Jesus’ way of life, we discover our true identity which is firmly rooted in Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection. Then we capture the hope that the life we gain with Jesus now and in eternity is worth the life we lose by sacrificially denying ourselves
