God Who Loves (Week 1): Protects Imperfects

Series big Idea:

God Who loves invites me to rely on His love by accepting His love.

Teaching Big Idea:

Even though I fail, God who loves never fails me.

Begin this session in prayer.

Consider asking for patience as you learn to rely on God’s love.

Talk it over:

Do you remember the first time someone let you down?
What makes it hard for you to rely on people?

Consider this statement: When we paint God the way we picture people, we incorrectly perceive God.
How have you seen this play out in life?

Scripture

And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.  God is love.  Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. 1 John 4:16 (NIV)

Observation & Interpretation

1. Do you remember how you felt when you first understood that God loves you?
2. What has helped you to learn to rely on God’s love?

Scripture

And he said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?” The man said, “The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.” Genesis 2:25 (NIV)

Observation & Interpretation

1. How easy is it for you to recognize when someone is ‘blame shifting’?
2. Why do you think it’s so hard to fess up when we mess up?

Scripture

There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment.  The one who fears is not made perfect in love. 1 John 4:18 (NIV)

Observation & Interpretation

1. Discuss what it means that we don’t have to fear the shame of not being perfect.
2. How do you think natural consequences of sin are different from punishment?

Which would you say is most challenging for you in accepting God’s love:

....acknowledging my need for His mercy
…receiving His forgiveness
…not living in fear of shame

CONCLUDE

Pray for God to help you understand that He will never fail to love you.
